Robert Weir grips the helm of HMS Warrior at the Portsmouth Royal Naval Yard in Portsmouth, England, in September 2001.Robert attended and wrote about the International Festival of the Sea, the largest gathering of tall ships in the world.
Launched in 1860, Warrior was the largest, fastest, and most heavily armed ship the world had ever seen --the pride of Queen Victoria's fleet. She was the first iron-hulled, armor-plated warship and the first vessel to incorporate steam power with traditional sail power. According to docents onboard, Warrior “immediately made all other warships obsolete.”
The helm on the main deck (shown here) is comprised of four wheels, connected on a drum, that eight men can grasp. Heavy lines wrapped around the drum connect to four more wheels on the deck below and to another four wheels on the deck below that, thus permitting up to 24 men to steer the ship. The docents claimed that during battle or heavy seas,
all of those hands would be necessary.
Interestingly, the engraving on the plate on the face
of the first wheel reads: THE PRINCESS IS MUCH PLEASED
